”If alot of people gripped a knife and fork the way they do a golf club, they’d starve to death”
The season is soon upon us and its time for you all to climb into the roof of your house and dust off your golf clubs.
In many respects golf seems such a simple game – swing the club back and hit the ball, but if you want my opinion it’s a "devilishly hard game to master!”
As the multi major winner Ben Hogan once said “Reverse every natural instinct and do the opposite of what you are inclined to do, and you will probably come very close to having a perfect golf swing.”
Having been in Norway for almost six seasons the patterns of most seasonal golfers is evident. Golf here is played from April through to the beginning of October, so generally golf is only practiced for 6 months. So do you think this game is easy to pick it up where you last left it?
One of the mysteries to me is just why more golfers don’t visit a PGA pro for lessons to help get started in this ridiculously short season we have here in Norway. Golfers will happily spend lots of money on the latest driver, take advice from their friends (whose knowledge of the golf swing can be written on the back of a postage stamp), BUT over look the idea of paying money to a PGA professional.
We will willing pay to see a dentist if our teeth are broken or a physiotherapist if our body is not working but we won’t invest a small amount of money in our PGA Professional when we can’t get out of a bunker. It’s the economics of a madhouse!
BUT…… the reality is that regular lessons with your pro and taking the time to practice what he or she says, is for me ultimately priceless.
TEN GOOD REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TAKE LESSONS
1) Lessons prevent bad habits developing.
2) Having an expert in the golf swing exclusively working on your game is a real buzz and it’s the opportunity to really get a sound platform.
3) Lessons are both rewarding to your game and an enjoyable experience.
4) Advice from books, magazines and friends can often lend mis-guided tips or advice but gaining the correct advice for you is priceless...
5) A PGA pro is a second pair of eyes – he can see your swing and, because of his expertise, can pinpoint your strengths and weaknesses and give you realistic goals to reach through practice regimes specifically for you.
6) The golf swing is a complex move. Lessons with a pro can help you understand what is happening, why it’s happening and what you need to do to improve.
7) Lessons help improve potential which includes being able to hit the ball further, straighter and more consistently.
8) Learn practice drills. Your PGA professional will be able to give you specific drills to help you on the part of your game that you’re working on.
9) Lessons are a great opportunity to discuss equipment with your PGA pro.
10) Lessons enable you to get the most out of your equipment.
Oh and one extra reason… Yyour coach can play a much larger role than you think – from advice on your swing, the psychology of golf, fitness and nutrition to help your endurance, and even creating a network of friends and future playing partners.
